Overview

The project CrossEnergy focuses on the future design of the power network infrastructure with strong emphasis on the cross-border cooperation. The project joins three international partners from Czech-Bavaria border region in order to establish highly qualified research infrastructure, which covers research fields (Forecasting, Planning, and Operation) necessary for the development of planning tools for regional power network infrastructure.

Figure bellow graphically captures particular research fields in the context of power networks. Two already deployed distribution power networks on the opposite border sides are colored by black and grid extensions are depicted by brown color.

The main technical objective of the project is to create a decision support tool considering demographic changes, technological trends, and regulatory policies in border regions for future design of (cross) border energy infrastructure enabled by economically reasonable, technically safe and societally acceptable measures. Developed decision support tool is based on three functional modules - Forecasting, Planning, and Operation.

Forecasting module predicts geospatial long-term and short-term evolution of selected indicators. Macroscopic long-term forecasts include the evolution of consumption/production requirements, generation/consumption portfolios linked with selected geographic area (raster). Macroscopic predictions coming from the forecasting module define requirements on power network extension solved in the planning module. Short-term predictions reflect consumption and generation patterns linked with particular places in the power network. These predictions are used for operational security assessment done in the operation module.

Planning module updates power network infrastructure based on expected energy requirements resulting from the forecasting module for instance. Planning module proposes several scenarios of power network expansion (e.g. deploy new power lines, cross-border connections etc.), which are consequently validated in the operational module. Aside others, planning module assesses update scenarios from an economical point of view, where each of proposed scenario includes costs for power network modification.

Operation module assessing power network operation from the network security and power quality point of view. Planning module provides operation one with upgraded power network, while forecasting module determines expected power injection profiles (load, generation profiles) linked with particular buses. Operation module provides decision support tool key performance indicators assessing power network operation from the technical point of view.
